A grassroots fight in Gary, Indiana, has exposed the deeply entrenched environmental and public health disparities confronting Black communities living in the shadow of heavy industry. Residents and environmental advocates are raising urgent alarms over air pollution generated by local steel plants, linking industrial emissions directly to alarmingly high rates of childhood asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses in the historically Black city.
For decades, Gary has served as a major industrial hub, with massive steel mills dominating its shoreline along Lake Michigan. While these facilities have historically provided economic opportunities, they have also left behind a legacy of severe environmental degradation. Local families are now asserting that the physical burden of this pollution—manifested in frequent emergency room visits, missed school days, and chronic health struggles for children—far outweighs the economic benefits once promised by heavy manufacturing.
Environmental Injustice and Childhood Asthma
